CarylW Posted 6 December , 2005 Share Posted 6 December , 2005 Terry Articles in the The Times February 01 1917....Headline War on the Wounded: Germany's New Threats: All Shipping to be Sunk "A case of cold blooded brutality to the crew of the British steamer Artist, sunk by a German submarine on January 27, is related by the Admiralty . The crew were put into an open boat 48 miles from land, and when picked up three days later seven of the 23 had died from wounds and exposure" Also in the same paper headline Sea Outrage "On Saturday in a heavy Easterly gale, the Artist a British steamer was torpedoed 48 miles from land. Of the crew who were forced into open boats "utterly without means of reaching land or succour", sixteen survived. The Admiratly do not mince their words about the fate of the rest "Those who preished during those three days of bitter exposure were murdered, and to pretend that anything was done to ensure their safety would be sheer hypocrisy" Same newspaper, another article "The Secretary of the Admiralty made the following announcement: "The British steamship Artist when 48 miles from land, in a heavy easterly gale was torpedoed by a German submarine on Saturday morning January 27. In response to her appeal sent by wireless 'SOS; sinking quickly', auxiliary patrol craft proceeded to the spot and searched the vicinity but found no trace of the vessel or her survivors. Three days later the Steamship Luchana picked up a boat containing 16 of the survivors. The boat had orginally contained 23 but seven had died from wounds or exposure and were buried at sea. The surviving 16 were landed and of these five were suffering from severe frostbite and one from a broken arm. The crew had been forced to abandon their ship in open boats in a mid-winter gale and utterly without means of reaching land or succour. Those who preished during those three days of bitter exposure were murdered, and to pretend that anything was done to ensure their safety would be sheer hypocrisy. The pledge given by Germany to the United States not to sink not to sink merchant ships without ensuring the safety of the crew and passengers has been broken before but never in circumstances of more cold blooded brutality" Caryl
