Help - Honourably Exempt Pin - Canada

Recommended Posts

I have just received a Canadian Honourably Exempt Pin with the number 3618 on the back. Does anyone have any idea as to the nature of this pin or where I can research the number? Thanks

Dan

Try National Archives in Ottawa. Likely issued with an exemption certificate to an essential occupation worker or a soldier of previous service. There was a similar pin issued by the Food Board to farm boys. Antony

Similar to a number of 'essential war work' and the like badges issued by various firms in the UK (and somewhat frowned on by the authorities) - essentially a white feather preventer.

My understanding is that this pin dates from late 1916 or 1917(possibly even later) and that it included or was focussed on particularly those men who had been declared physically unfit to serve and/or returned soldiers who having successfully convalesced and wished to return were declared "honourably exempt." The white feather analogy is correct - indeed many home front badges intended to serve this purpose.
