HesterEsther Posted 27 November , 2010 Share Posted 27 November , 2010 This is the last of my unknown soldiers, who looks very young... If anyone can suggest his regiment I'd be very grateful. It seems even more important to remember them, when you don't know who they are, somehow.
HarryBettsMCDCM Posted 27 November , 2010 Share Posted 27 November , 2010 Probably the Welch/Welsh Regt but the Pow Feathers Badge is was worn by a number of Regiments,

Peter J Posted 28 November , 2010 Share Posted 28 November , 2010 I'd agree, 'The Welsh Regiment' The darker G/M scroll at the badge's base is just about discenible in the photo. Regards,

FROGSMILE Posted 28 November , 2010 Share Posted 28 November , 2010 I agree it is almost certainly the Welsh Regiment, although one slight possibility is the Leinster Regiment who had a manufacturers 'variant' to their standard badge which used the same curved PoW feathers as the Welsh. Peter J Posted 28 November , 2010 Share Posted 28 November , 2010 Frogsmile makes a very good point - the angle of the 'Ich Dien' section of the scroll in the serviceman's photo does appear to have the more angular characteristic found on the Leinsters badge. However, the ends of the Leinsters scroll hang down more prominently and are swallow-tailed, rather than curl; as seen on the Welsh Regt. example. Regards, I am not convinced it is Leinsters because the resolution is not good enough but here is a 'standard' pattern badge for comparison. The 'variant' used the same PoW feathers as the Welsh, but its own horizontal title scroll at the base.
Peter J Posted 28 November , 2010 Share Posted 28 November , 2010 It's just a shame that the original photo is so unclear. Nicely photographed badges, by the way, F. Regards,
Piorun Posted 28 November , 2010 Share Posted 28 November , 2010 Would agree with Welsh. Is there anything on reverse or edges of photo? Are you able to post a sharper image or is that close to the original? It's pretty fuzzy for a photo of the time. Antony
HesterEsther Posted 29 November , 2010 Author Share Posted 29 November , 2010 Hi all, original is a photo postcard with only "from the studio of Dura Ltd" to identify it. Here's another version of the crop photo with increased resolution. Don't think it is possible to decide between Welch & Leinsters even now but see what you think. Thank you

Thank you Dura was a well-known firm of photographers in Wales, primarily Glamorgan, through the Victorian era. You might be able to find archival records. HesterEsther Posted 1 December , 2010 Author Share Posted 1 December , 2010 Thank you Antony, that is a useful bit of info, particularly as all the suggestions are Welsh regiments apart from Leinsters. Regards
