HesterEsther Posted 27 November , 2010 Share Posted 27 November , 2010 Hi there This is the second unknown soldier from my collection, but with less to go on this time, only a greatcoat and cap badge. If anyone can identify it for me I would be very grateful.
HarryBettsMCDCM Posted 27 November , 2010 Share Posted 27 November , 2010 Looks to be possibly South [or North} Staffordshire Regiment & Crowned Knot or the PoW Feathers atop a Knot?? Or could be at a pinch Royal Berkshire Regt ~ A Dragon above a scroll
HesterEsther Posted 27 November , 2010 Author Share Posted 27 November , 2010 Thank you, thank you, what's a PoW Feathers?
Wardog Posted 27 November , 2010 Share Posted 27 November , 2010 Prince of Wales feathers. I would go along with the badge possibilities given but think it unlikely from the image you will get a possitive ID on it. The greatcoat could be a mounted version as it is not the single brested infantry version. regards, Paul.
Sepoy Posted 27 November , 2010 Share Posted 27 November , 2010 Personally, I think that it is an Army Cyclist Corps Cap Badge slightly tilted back on the chaps head. Cheers Sepoy
HesterEsther Posted 28 November , 2010 Author Share Posted 28 November , 2010 Thank you both, wardog and sepoy. Lots of possibilities there then. I agree it's a long shot, but as they have at least a 50-50 chance of being a family member I can work through a list of possible names (right age at the right time and so on) and regiments in the Medal Index. Mounted greatcoat is interesting, presumably he wouldn't have been put in a mounted regiment unless he could already ride, or would he? One side of the family is all townies so no riders there, but tother was half farming stock so that's a possibility, if I can find one who didn't stay home. Anyway many thanks again. FROGSMILE Posted 28 November , 2010 Share Posted 28 November , 2010 I agree with sepoy, it looks very like a Cyclists cap badge and the mounted pattern greatcoat fits with that, as one 'mounts' a bicycle and legs needed to be free of the encumbrance of a long infantry greatcoat. HesterEsther Posted 29 November , 2010 Author Share Posted 29 November , 2010 Hi all, here is a higher resolution version of the crop photo. I'm quite attracted by the idea of the Army Cyclist Corps because of the greatcoat, though I don't think his cap badge looks all that much like the one you've posted. But thank you all for your time and thoughts. Regards
jay dubaya Posted 30 November , 2010 Share Posted 30 November , 2010 I'm with HB on this one, my first thought is South Staffordshire closely followed by the Berkshires or possibly even the Buffs, Jon
