battiscombe Posted 21 November , 2010 Share Posted 21 November , 2010 I have reason to believe this photo may show a RGA Lt in 1914 - and am thinking the ribbons are QSA and KSA .. probably right for a slighty older subaltern in 1914 .. and the photo has the general look of early in the war.. Andrew Upton Posted 21 November , 2010 Share Posted 21 November , 2010 Ribbons certainly look right for the QSA/KSA pair.
Old Owl Posted 21 November , 2010 Share Posted 21 November , 2010 Definitely QSA,KSA, but very difficult to date the photo, other than WW1 period.
battiscombe Posted 22 November , 2010 Author Share Posted 22 November , 2010 Thanks for that - Having looked at some Army Lists I am curious now in that it seems unlikely that many officers who has served in South Africa as young subalterns could have still been Lts in 1914, (I reckon about 20-25 commissioned 1901-ish were still Lts in Aug 1914) so presumably he is otherwise a promoted ranker who has served in South Africa, or recalled retired officer or suchlike. If later in the war the picture perhaps lacks the usual sprinkling of ribbons/wound badges/chevrons etc. ..., but this Sgt's chevrons are a little odd perhaps.. or maybe not? Are these 'normal', or distinctive in any way? thanks..
