The sketch maps are by Major Stratford Edward St Leger, a skilled artist and draughtsman who had served in the Boer War. During his army service he carried a sketch book and notebooks in his haversack and made rough sketches which he would then work up into pen or pencil drawings or into water colours. His work appeared in the London magazine Black and White by 1900, or possibly earlier. He produced a book entitled War Sketches in colour in 1903. In 1904 he exhibited at the Bruton Galleries in Mayfair some fifty water colours and fifteen large works and a number of smaller pen and ink drawings. He survived the war and died in Hove in October 1935. Two of his sketches are in the Houses of Parliament in Cape Town.

The letter is from Major (later Lieutenant Colonel) Edward Henry Edwin Daniell, commanding officer of the 2nd Battalion, RIR, who was killed at La Pilly on 20 October 1914 aged 46 and is commemorated at Le Touret. He was born in Blandford in 1868, son of a GP. His uncle was Major Daniell (late of the Royal Munster Fusiliers). Gazetted to the Royal Irish Regiment on 9 April 1892, aged 24. Served on the North West Frontier, India 1897-98, taking part in the operations on the Samana – medal with two clasps, a Captain in October 1899, served in South Africa 1899-1902 (mentioned in dispatches twice, Queen’s medal, 3 clasps, King’s medal, 2 clasps, DSO in 1900. He took part in operations in Orange River Colony in May-August 1900, actions at Bethlehem in July, Wittebergen in July, operations in Cape Colony 1900 and in Colesburg. He was Assistant provost Marshall October 1900-March 1901, and was afterwards employed with Damant’s Horse (formerly Rimington’s Guides). He was present at operations in the Transvaal 30 November 1901 to May 1901 and March-May 1902. Mentioned in dispatches LG September 1901, 29 July 1902]. He was placed on the list of Officers considered qualified for Staff employment in consequence of service on the Staff in the Field. Adjutant of the RIR from 1 June 1902 to 30 May 1903, appointed DAAG North China August 1903 to October 1905; DAA and QMG North China November 1905-August 1907. He married Winifred Currey in 1904, one son and one daughter. Promoted Major in August 1909. Employed on General Staff (3rd Grade) Army Headquarters and War Office 15 October 1909-25 November 1911. GSO (3rd Grade) Malta, 26 November 1911. He went to France with the Battalion in August 1914. Willie,

Where did you get Maj. Daniell's letter. Have you any photos of him?

The original colour version of the Mons map (and Caudry, maybe others too) can be found in the War Diary for the 2nd Battalion, Royal Irish Regiment, as an appendix to August 1914... if you have an Ancestry subscription. 🙂
