charlesmessenger Posted 11 March , 2003 Share Posted 11 March , 2003 Has anyone come across really unusual names for military camps during WW1? I personally like the really martial sounding Pease Pottage Camp, Crawley, where the 30th (Works) Bn Middlesex Regiment spent its early months. Tom Morgan Posted 11 March , 2003 Share Posted 11 March , 2003 There was Dirty Bucket Camp just between Ypres and Poperinge. That name takes some beating. Tom

John_Hartley Posted 11 March , 2003 Share Posted 11 March , 2003 Charles Pease Pottage - nice name, but I'm afraid just a suburb of Crawley. Nothing creative. John
Andrew P Posted 12 March , 2003 Share Posted 12 March , 2003 In Western Australia where all the local recruits were initially sent was Blackboy Hill Camp. (Blackboy is a native Australian plant - now in this PC era this bush is called a Grass plant)
Jacky Platteeuw Posted 12 March , 2003 Share Posted 12 March , 2003 Tom, Dirty Bucket is a literal translation of the Flemish "vuile seule". The hamlet and pub (now a restaurant ) still exist as such. Jacky
Tom Morgan Posted 12 March , 2003 Share Posted 12 March , 2003 Thanks Jacky, That's a "must" for my April visit then. Must go and eat in the Dirty Bucket! Tom

Anthony Ward Posted 8 September , 2022 Share Posted 8 September , 2022 Thank you so much - was this camp used after the 3rd battle of Ypres - I have a blank for my Dad's war diaries April 1917 he was with the 58th brigade on the Somme and Oct 1917 he is at Brubant Farm and Cane Post but I cannot find where these might be? Then he went to Dirty Bucket Camp in West Flanders which I find linked to Ypres Salient

TEW http://digitalarchive.mcmaster.ca/islandora/object/macrepo%3A66680/-/collection Thank you so much - do you happen to have or let me know where I can get the map of the enlarged area with some notes as to what the various lines mean? TEW Posted 10 September , 2022 Share Posted 10 September , 2022 The map showing various camps is Sheet 28 NW 1. If you want sheets for 28 NW or just for 28 they are on the same site: http://lt1.mcmaster.ca/ww1/wrz4mp.php?grid=28 Not so sure you'll find a key to the lines on 28 NW 1 though. From what I can see the red lines are trenches, railways, light railways. There are some odd lines in A11 central which maybe latrines or drains.
