ericwebb Posted 5 October , 2010 Share Posted 5 October , 2010 Gosh chaps, aren't we smart in our new clothes! I was in Béthune last week, hoping to find the Globe - or its site - but no luck. It is mentioned in many memoirs 1914 - 1918. Dr. Travis Hampson records: ‘During quiet times when round about Béthune, the meeting place for officers was the Café du Globe in the square of the town. Here at about 11.00 AM one generally drank champagne cocktails at one franc a time.’ For Ian Hay it was the ‘Café de la Terre’. As Béthune was nicely restored post-war, one of the buildings around the square seems likely to be the original, or at least a re-creation of the original, but which? Does anyone know, or has anyone a contemporary photo? Having failed in my mission I had to put up with Coca Cola! Best love to all!
