Newspapers from Latvia

Now Riga's old newspapers in Russian and German are available on the internet. The National Library of Latvia now presents the opportunity to read newspapers from the 20th and even the 19th century online.

Reading Riga's old newspapers is as exciting an experience as walking the Old Town's narrow streets. Going through those old texts is like taking an imaginary journey into what occupied Rigans' minds and thoughts many decades ago.

The websites www.periodika.lv and lnb.lv present digital versions not only of dozens of old newspapers in Latvian, but also several publications in Russian and German.

The internet depositary of Latvian newspapers and magazines www.periodika.lv also encompases editions of German newspaper “Rigasche Rundschau” published from 1895 to 1907, and “Segodnya”, one of the biggest Russian newspapers published outside of Russia, from 1919 to 1925. The Latvian National Library offers the “Liflandskie Gubernskie Vedemosti” and the “Rizhskii Vestnik” published in Riga in 1905, as well as the “Kurlandskie Gubernskie Vedemosti” published in Jelgava in 1906 at the Digital Library's newspaper section www.lnb.lv.

German newspapers published in other Latvian cities and towns are also available at the webpage www.lnb.lv, namely, the “Anzeiger für Goldingen und Windau” (Kuldīga, 1927–1929), the “Goldingenscher Anzeiger” (Kuldīga, 1911–1915, 1929–1930), the “Mitausche Zeitung” (Jelgava, 1905–1906) and the “Windausche Zeitung” (Ventspils, 1901, 1903, 1907–1914, 1924– 1925, 1927– 1931).
