River97 Posted 18 September , 2010 Share Posted 18 September , 2010 Ladies and gentlemen, I took a drive to Adelaide (West Terrace) Cemetery this morning in the hope that I could locate the grave of Private Albert Walladge. I understood fully that if the register was not available then the chance of finding him would be very slim to say the least. The register was up and working and the system allowed the user to print a map of the grave reference. This was going to be a lot easier than I thought. With map in hand off I went - got geographically embarrassed - as the map showed a road where there was no road (I walked up and down a row five or six times). Eventually I crossed the road, walked to the end of the isle and there he was. I must say, if the register had not been available I would have never found him. Let me introduce you to the final resting place of Private Albert Walladge, an Australian soldier who has been gone for 95 years, yet has been on the CWGC Debt of Honour for four days. The first shot is the group of graves, with Albert on the far left. Please note that the four at front and the six behind are all fallen Australian soldiers who died at home sometime in mid to late 1915. I will have to see if they are all commemorated. The four at front , from left to right are Private Albert Walladge, Private Lionel Stephens, Private Andrew Orr and Private Herbert Bowes. The entire plot 5 is littered with these service members who lost their lives at home. The second photo is of Albert's grave - right on the end, and in a bit if a state. Now he has received his due recognition, this should be rectified sometime in the future. The final photo is of Albert's small headstone. I sat there for a few minutes with a grin on my face, thinking that in some way I was responsible for him now, I had now become his witness. There he was on the end of a row, in a back corner of the cemetery, right next to the boundary wall, in a part of this vast cemetery that would get very few, if any visitors at all. I gave his headstone a kiss, and told him I would be back. Albert - welcome home, gone but no longer forgotten. Cheers Andy.

River97 Posted 26 September , 2010 Share Posted 26 September , 2010 Evening all, I told Albert I would be back and this time took the wife and children to see him. Bought some flowers yesterday to place on his grave and also printed the certificate off the CWGC Debt of Honour. Here is the photo. Cheers Andy.
