markl Posted 8 June , 2004 Share Posted 8 June , 2004 I have a copy of the above book which appears to have been printed in 1915. I just thought it was interesting that books were being produced about the war whilst it was still going on.
AndyHollinger Posted 9 June , 2004 Share Posted 9 June , 2004 I have a copy of The War in Europe: It's causes and Consequences by Rossiter Johnson - published in 1914 in New York. The frontspiece is wonderful as it shows a bunch of dark men in picklehaube attacking a bunch of French (?) because of their hats whose officer, on horseback, is firing a pistol at the attackers. Overhead a dirigible is firing machine guns and dropping bombs but is being attacked by what looks like a Fokker Eindekker. If one examines the fine print ... "For much of the recent and accurate information in this volume the writers are indebted to Nelsons Perpetual Loose-Leaf Encyclopaedia" In the final chapter "The war will constitute a more urgent reason to destroy monarchical institutions, autocratic power and to banish militarism - a reason forced upon the consciousness of all by the maimed and dead bodies of fathers and sons, husbands and brothers by the starved underdevelopment of women and children and by the terrible desolation brooding over the continent like and evil spirit. The quote being Samual Gompers - a US Socialist. Whew! Think of this being published in 1914!

Guest Lol Posted 17 July , 2004 Share Posted 17 July , 2004 We have "The Great War - A history" by Mumby et. al. and it's in NINE volumes. They're very old, and it seems to be a complete set - the ninth volume details the peace treaty with Germany. Is it possible that this volume has been reprinted and expanded to ten volumes? Is it possible that we have an original set?

Terry_Reeves Posted 17 July , 2004 Share Posted 17 July , 2004 Frank Arthur Mumby (1872 - 1954) was a journalist and historian. A search of the internet, throws up a number of his other publications. Terry Reeves
