Roger H Posted 2 September , 2010 Share Posted 2 September , 2010 Whilst visiting Croome Park today, I noticed this memorial on the junction of the A4104 and the minor road leading from the village of Earl's Croome. I thought it unusual, especially the sentiment on top of the cross (see post below). Roger
Roger H Posted 2 September , 2010 Author Share Posted 2 September , 2010 And I thought that this was very thought provoking and very apt: Roger And the names for those interested. Has anyone done any research on this memorial? Roger
Simon_Fielding Posted 2 September , 2010 Share Posted 2 September , 2010 The same inscription is on the memorial cross here in Cirencester - I think its quite common. Bible Gateway reminds me its Lamentations 1:12 (King James Version) 12Is it nothing to you, all ye that pass by? behold, and see if there be any sorrow like unto my sorrow, which is done unto me, wherewith the LORD hath afflicted me in the day of his fierce anger. Moving words...
Roger H Posted 2 September , 2010 Author Share Posted 2 September , 2010 Simon Thanks for that. I did wonder whether is was a quote from the Bible. Roger
KevinBattle Posted 2 September , 2010 Share Posted 2 September , 2010 Sad little addition to this, Mia Smith caught my eye as being an unusual Name. Born 1885, killed 31 July 1917, commemorated on Panel 21 Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial. There is a Marriage record for Apr-Jun Qtr 1917 showing his marriage to Sarah A Gibbs, so he was killed shortly after his return to the trenches. I am trying hard to persevere with this site after it's extensively prolonged revamp, but the absence of a simple "View New Post" button and irritations like this make visits here so less fun...... ) Added: Until an hour or so ago, I never knew of a place called Earls Croome. I have now used a genealogy website (!!) and have found the following which seem to have a connection to this Memorial or Earls Croome. I leave it for you to decide what to do with the information, but I imagined at first that it was a tiny sleepy hamlet.... Next time, if I post similar, I won't edit, if it uses tons of bandwidth, perhaps that'll prompt some action to remedy this glitch..........) (nzef) Posted 3 September , 2010 Share Posted 3 September , 2010 Hi, Double spacing is caused by the formatting of the text you are copying. Tip: Copy the text to notepad first, then to the site. This generally removes the formatting :-) Cheers
Roger H Posted 3 September , 2010 Author Share Posted 3 September , 2010 KevinW4 Interesting stuff. I can assure you, it is a small village! Roger
KevinBattle Posted 3 September , 2010 Share Posted 3 September , 2010 nzef: Thanks, but I copy and paste into Word as unformatted text, which previously here, and still does on other website forums I use, show correctly. I don't use Notepad and if that's the only solution then another black mark against continuing to use this site. Roger H: Is this the full extent of Earls Croome related casualties? It seems to be 21 or so from what I found, is there any other Memorial in the village or Church? As a percentage of the adult male population, that must make it one of the highest loss ratios I've come across. Was his Name really Fassett Arbouin Burnett, or is there some mistranscription?
Roger H Posted 3 September , 2010 Author Share Posted 3 September , 2010 Kevin I really don't know the answers - I only happened to be passing and thought it was an unusual memorial so I took some photos. On reflection, at the time of WW1 the village (and environs) would have had more residents due to the influence of Croome Park House. http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/main/w-vh/w-visits/w-findaplace/w-croomepark/ Roger
NZMR Posted 21 May , 2014 Share Posted 21 May , 2014 Was his Name really Fassett Arbouin Burnett, or is there some mistranscription? Hi Kevin, Only four years late in answering your question, but the answer is yes, that is his real name! Cheers Phil
