ypres Posted 8 June , 2004 Share Posted 8 June , 2004 Hi all, I hope i am putting this in the right place. I live in Seaford, East Sussex. We have a large CWGC contingent mostly men from Canada who died of (I believe) the flu. Any one of our friends over in Canada want photo's then let me know. I now have a digital and can send via e-mail. (I am getting clever you know!) On a different note! Some of the men were from the forestry corps, so okay who were they? what did they do? was it a name or were they foresters over in Canada and got the name from that? Thanks, Mandy
Broznitsky Posted 8 June , 2004 Share Posted 8 June , 2004 The Canadian Forestry Corps (CFC) was created in response to the vast need for timber, both in Britain and in France. Originally, a few battalions were recruited in Canada and then sent out. A lot of these men would have had forestry or "lumberjack" experience, from both Eastern and Western Canada. These battalions were later broken up, and the CFC contained about 60 companies in France and about 40 in Britain by war's end. Older men or those with physical problems sometimes were transferred into the CFC. Of interest to me, most "Russians" serving as front-line infantry in the CEF were moved into the CFC at the request of the Bolshevik government after they surrendered to the Germans in 1917. Providing timber for trenches, dugouts, duckboards, roads, railways, buildings, and airfields were some of their duties. Some companies guarded German POWs who operated in forestry duties. Most of the CFC not transferred in from combat units did not receive infantry training; however in March 1918 about 800 men were given specific training in the event they were needed as front-line reinforcements. Records and war diaries for the CFC are notoriously skimpy. Yet another research project for me! Hope this helps. Peter in Vancouver
ypres Posted 8 June , 2004 Author Share Posted 8 June , 2004 Peter, Many thanks for that, i thought it must be to do with forestry. I'll check the ages when I next go in. I know today i was noticing that a good few of the ages were over 30. Thanks again. Mandy

Borden Battery Posted 9 June , 2004 Share Posted 9 June , 2004 Hello Mandy 8 June 04 If you are interested, I can direct you to a couple of websites with letters sent home from Camp Seaford by CEF soldiers including my late Grandfather. He was with the 196th Western Universities Battalion which was then disbanded - he was Taken On Strength by the 19th Reserve Battalion before joining the Borden Motor Machine Gun Battery. mordac Posted 9 June , 2004 Share Posted 9 June , 2004 We have a large CWGC contingent mostly men from Canada who died of (I believe) the flu. Hi Mandy: I was intrigued with your post, so I check on the cause of death for the Canadians buried at the Seaford Cemetery. As you can see, most of the men are listed as DOD (died of disease) or DOS (died of sickness). I was surprised and saddened to find three men who died by suicide and one by self inflicted wounds. May all these men rest in peace. Died of Sickness, Influenza at 1:40pm on October 24, 1918. Buried at Terlincthun British Cemetery France Plot IV Row C Grave 24 A note for Terry Denham: The CWGC has incorrectly shown Carter as an MM. My concern is that his Grave marker correctly identifies the award of the DCM. I can supply more information in regards to his award if you require it? paul guthrie Posted 9 June , 2004 Share Posted 9 June , 2004 The CFC also had a number of blacks, some were segregated. One, John Benjamin French is buried here in Lexington, Kentucky with a new headstone. He got the 1st in 1933 when his June 1919 death from TB was determinedd to have been service related. He remained in Montreal after discharge but lived only 11 months. He did serve in France. I was surprised & disappointed to learn of the segregation in Canadian Army. ypres Posted 9 June , 2004 Author Share Posted 9 June , 2004 Paul, No not Brookwood, although its not far (about and hour or hour and half drive). Seaford Cemetery is the town cemetery and the lads are in 3 plots for ww1 and one plot for the 2nd, there are one or two on their own and one veteran has a headstone like the CWGC but has "Veteran of the Great War" at the top. mordac Posted 9 June , 2004 Share Posted 9 June , 2004 The name errors have been corrected in the past two weeks! Hi Terry: Thanks for the update. You know, when you think about the number of casualties the CWGC recorded, the original method of recording these deaths and the transfer of the information to a computerized database, I think the number of mistakes that were made is relatively small. Two thumbs up for the CWGC. Garth

Citation for the DCM: For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He with another man was in a trench mortar emplacement in action against the enemy. Whilst he was in the act of dropping a bomb into the barrel, the flylever flew off and the fuse ignited. On the gun missing fire he tipped up the barrel, seized the bomb and threw it out of the pit. As the bomb left his hands it exploded, the force of the explosion knocking him down. He acted with the most commendable promptitude, and at the risk of his own life saved the life of his companion and prevented the destruction of the gun pit.
