GrahamC Posted 31 August , 2010 Share Posted 31 August , 2010 Hi pals My source who supplied the photographs of the Menin Gate opening etc has lent me some more items and I thought you might be interested in these training photos of trench catapult and sling gun. The Officer in each is Major Frank Brindley - mentioned in an earlier post - see here - as his were the albums of the Menin Gate and the 1928 Pilgrimmage. If anyone can put a name to any of the other faces I would be grateful. Graham
rksimpson Posted 1 September , 2010 Share Posted 1 September , 2010 Hi Graham Interesting photos I presume the idea of both of them was to throw explosives at the other trenches? How accurate would they be? regards Robert
GrahamC Posted 1 September , 2010 Author Share Posted 1 September , 2010 In the immortal words of Scotty: "You canna change the laws of physics", so I guess after a bit of training as to angle of projection you could probably land it right in the enemy trenches. The second photo is annotated on the back: "Trench catapult for throwing bombs" and the third one reads: "Spring gun for throwing bombs" - bombs being grenades, I believe.
