SWorrall Posted 29 August , 2010 Share Posted 29 August , 2010 Davie, The divisions involved at Messines in 1917 were; 23rd, 47th & 41st of X Corps 19th, 16th (Irish) & 36th (Ulster) of IX Corps 25th British, 1st New Zealand & 3rd Australian of II ANZAC Corps, Not only were there no Royal Scots battalions involved, there were no Scots battalions at all. 4 of the 5 mainland UK divisions included a very high proportion of battalions from Northumberland, Durham, Yorkshire, Lancashire regiments, with a leavening of those from the Midlands and the West Country, 3 from Wales and a handful of battalions from other regiments. The 47th was a London divsion, apart from the pioneer battalion, which was Welsh. SW.

Robert Dunlop Posted 30 August , 2010 Share Posted 30 August , 2010 Not only were there no Royal Scots battalions involved, there were no Scots battalions at all.I wonder if this reflected, in part, the significant role that Scots battalions played in the earlier Battle of Arras.Robert
