hornetsfan Posted 29 August , 2010 Share Posted 29 August , 2010 I have recently received some photo albums which belonged to a Lt.Shorter of 1/8th bat.Essex Reg and Royal Flying Corps ( the 20 year old was killed in action over the western front in 1918 ) . Here I'm interested to learn more about his service with the Essex . I understand this battalion was reserved for defence and never left England . The album has many photos of training ..trenches ,gas drill , explosions etc ...can anyone help me learn a little more about the nature / structure/function of this battalion ?...I wonder how many of the younger men would have eventually seen service on the front ...was one of its primary functions the training of young officers? Most photos date to 1915 ,but a few are dated 1917 . many thanks jim
