Hi

I have recently started to research an ancestor Pte: Alfred Victor Funnell, G/9953 killed 9/10/16, was wondering if anybody has excerpts of war diaries for this approximate date please for the Queens Own (Royal West Kent Regiment).

Any replies greatly appreciated.

You can download the 10th's war diaries here CLICK

I have a copy of the regimental history which states that in the early hours of the 9th October the 123rd Brigade replaced the 122nd Brigade. The 11th West Kents were relieved by the 23rd Middlesex and the 10th West Kents had taken up positions in support to the 23rd Middlesex.

It goes on to say

"This battalion once again came off much more lightly than the 11th. It had been in reserve on the 7th, had moved up into the British front line that evening and had found working parties to help consolidate the advanced position. Notwithstanding this, and despite being quite heavily shelled while in support, it escaped with one officer killed, two wounded, and under 100 casulties in all. It was relieved on the night of October 10th/11th."

The above has to be taken into context with the casulties suffered by the 11th West Kents in their attack on the 7th in which only 4 officers and less than 100 men were left out of 16 officers and 465 other ranks that went into action.

Stuart.
