Remembered Today:

Labour Corps

I have come across a CWGC entry for a 2742 Sgt T Reynolds, 2/South Lancs then Labour Corps, with a note 'Tfr to Clearing Office'.

Can anyone explain this, possibly Ivor Lee?

Thanks ahead

By October 1918 the number of Labour Corps personnel being returned from

overseas to hospitals in Britain due to sickness or wounds had become so great that

a new way of dealing with their administration had to be devised. These were men

who were expected to return to service. Rather than the Labour centre dealing with

their administration, it was decided to create a clearing office that was located in

Nottingham.

When a man was discharged from hospital he was granted leave, at the

end of which he would be posted to the Labour centre in the command in which

his home address was situated, or if this centre had no accommodation, the nearest

one. It was expected that a soldier would receive a posting order within two days

of completing his leave period.

Thank you for that - I thought you would know, and it all makes sense.
