6th Liverpool Regt. This design in blackened brass was unique to them. They had formerly been a Rifles Battalion before the 1908 reorganisation and kept their Rifles affectations.

is this what you wanted - I re-scanned the photo but couldn't get any more detail

Hi, the flash looks like it is about 3" length x 2" sides. I have copied a list of 3x2 flashes worn by different Battalions. The 6th Kings wore a shape red letters on black " LIVERPOOL RIFLES " emblem on felt. I am not saying the photo is not 6th L/Pool I just cannot a 3x2 flash to them.

Max4747:- Managed to find a picture of the badge (for sale!) online at:

http://www.cultmanco...ap-badge-1.html

Spot-on!!

- Thanks again for your help.

Next step, - trying to identify one of the men! (5th from left, back row) !

John:- I tried manipulating the photo - pushing the contrast & brightness etc., - sorry - can't make out any writing on the patches at all.

I notice 4 in the front row have badge on left sleeve, would they be trades badges???

Skill-at-Arms badges - given the two Lewis guns almost certainly the LG in a wreath to denote a 1st class shot for the same (although MG for Machine Gun is another possibility).

Hi,

I've re-scanned the areas of interest and they look to me like MG within a laurel wreath

similar to the one for "heavy machine gunner" as shown on : http://www.diggerhis...dges/trade2.htm

"Heavy Machine Gunners" wrong on that site, it's Machine Gunner pure and simple. LG only came out in 1917 if I recall correctly, whereas MG had been around before the war. Until then the Lewis gunners used the MG badge, so the picture likely pre-dates then.
