hi. i would be so grateful if any one can enlighten me on lord roberts i have up in my loft a large leather trav velling trunk .it is made of the finest leather and embossed in to the leather are the words c.o.r. then underneath that are the words x1 lancers, this being the 9th lancers. then just above the brass locking mechanism are the words porter mayfair london .this case i feel was made for lord roberts on his war campaign as no soldier or officer could have possibly had such an item made it would surely have been beyond there means as it is a stunning item. could anyone help me with an answer to the following does the initials c.o.r. stand for commanding officer roberts ? and has anyone heard of a military outfitter or leather trunk specialist by the name of porter mayfair. any information would i assure you be greatly appreciated.regards hartleyc

Bobs was F S Roberts and IX is 9. XI is 11. What makes you associate this trunk with Lord Roberts? I rather doubt that he was the only officer of his era who could afford good luggage.
