Captain Dolling was indeed a brave man. After joining the 2nd Battalion towards the end of 1915 he was subsequently wounded in the fighting for the craters at Givenchy in February 1916. For this action he was awarded an MC for "conspicuously gallant leading during a night attack. It was mainly due to his coolness in handling his men that the assaulting party took the position aimed at. He was wounded in three places, but kept up the morale of his men." He was again wounded on the night of the 25th April, 1916, in a raid on German trenches at Cuinchy.

He lies with many of his RWF comrades at Flatiron Copse Cemetery, near Mametz Wood.

Remembered today.
