Steve,

The Scottish National War Memorial has a list of Scottish born soldiers who died during the Great War. There is only 1 John Lafferty mentioned. He served in the Australian Army, he was born in Glasgow, and his mother Catherine also appears to have lived in Australia. If this is not your man, then he seems to have survived the war.

Regards,

Alf McM

On "Genes Reunited" there is a tree owned by Margaret Black which contains John Lafferty born Lasswade 1889, Do you know her?

If you don't and you're a member of Genes Reunited it's worth contacting her.

If you're not a member, let me know and I can contact her for you and draw her attention to your post.

I had a look on Scotlands people and there is no record in "Service Returns Deaths" for a John Lafferty during WW1 so he either didn't die, or he had moved away from Scotland, I then did a search for a Scottish death of John Lafferty with a birth year of 1888 + or - 1 year and these are the results, the columns are:

Year of Death, Name, Age at Death, District, County or City.

1912 LAFFERTY JOHN 25 ECCLESMACHAN - WEST LOTHIAN

1939 LAFFERTY JOHN 52 GREENOCK EAST - RENFREW

1941 LAFFERTY JOHN 53 AIRDRIE OR NEW MONKLAND - LANARK

1945 LAFFERTY JOHN 58 GREENOCK EAST - RENFREW

1947 LAFFERTY JOHN 58 GOUROCK - RENFREW

1970 LAFFERTY JOHN 82 GLASGOW - GLASGOW/LANARK

1962 LAFFERTY JOHN WILLIAMSON 73 KILMACOLM - RENFREW

Steve,

The death records listed by Roughdiamond will tell you if John survived the war, unless he is the first name on the list. However, there are 4 records of a John Lafferty marrying between 1914 and 1918. If he was in the Army when he was married then his regiment, and sometimes service number, would be shown on his marriage certificate. Details are shown below:-

1. 1916 John Lafferty & Mary Lindsay in St. Giles Edinburgh/Midlothian

2. 1917 John Lafferty & Prudence Alice Martin at St Rollox Glasgow

3. 1914 John Lafferty & Annie Taylor at Barrhead and Levern, Glasgow

4. 1918 John Lafferty &Ruth Warren at Calton, Glasgow/Lanark

Number 1 would appear to be favourite!

Regards,

Alf McM

First one does look good the family have used that church before thanks for your help.

St Giles is a District in Edinburgh for the purposes of Records mate, not a Church.

Its a church a cathedral and an area of edinburgh.

I know that Steve, that's why I wrote "for the purposes of records", John Lafferty and Mary Lindsay Married in the St Giles Area of Edinburgh (9 Bank St to be precise), also he isn't your man, he was 29 years old and his parents were Edward and Ann.
