markyB Posted 16 August , 2010 Share Posted 16 August , 2010 Is there a way of converting Grid positions as used on Trench Maps, into conventional Lat/ Long to enter into a GPS? I want to visit some positions as listed in regimental diaries later in the year and would like to be as accurate as possible. Any ideas, folks? Thanks Mark B
Guest Posted 17 August , 2010 Share Posted 17 August , 2010 Hi Mark. All I know about it is HERE and HERE It's a start, and others may be able to help further. Google earth should help. There is also Linesman I think it's expensive though. Cheers Mike
chris mccarthy Posted 17 August , 2010 Share Posted 17 August , 2010 I'm with Mike, Google Earth and Linesman. Half an hour with ether or both will give you all you you need. Chris

Smithmaps Posted 17 August , 2010 Share Posted 17 August , 2010 No easy/ cheap solution, then! Never mind, thanks gents. Mark LinesMan is the only tool that will do it with any accuracy, as the British grids are not a true geographic grid. They are therefore not readily convertible by maths. Easy/Cheap solution is to post the grid reference on this forum, and ask if a LinesMan licensee will do the conversion for you. It only takes a moment. Suggest a small number at a time and don't push your luck! Guy

RobertBr Posted 31 August , 2010 Share Posted 31 August , 2010 A while ago I tried developing a spreadsheet to do the translation. However it relies on having a known reference point in the area. Currently I have ref points in 51B, 57C, 36C. If any of these are relevant then you could e-mail me the Trench co-ords and I will run them through the macros.
