Remembered Today:

King Edward's Horse

Recommended Posts

Hi there, I'm new to the Forum.

A great uncle of mine (an Aussie) served in King Edward's Horse. (I believe it was the 1st KEH)

Sydney George Kibble / Service No: 1228 / Rank: Sgt Major / 1st Section 1st Troop C Squadron (as of June 1917)

He was wounded at Passchendaele July 1917, and Discharged 6th October 1917.

Could somebody possibly help me out with a few questions I have ?

1. Regarding the Regimental badge, what did the finish of it look like ?

i.e. was it a brass finish, or a silver/white metal finish ?

2. When were the 1st KEH deployed to France ?

i.e. would he have been entitled to the 1914-15 Star Medal ?

3. Did the 1st KEH wear the Aussie style Slouch Hat when on active duty during the Great War ?

I've heard of the book 'History of King Edward's Horse' (The King's Overseas Dominions Regiment).

Unfortunately it is very scarce, and expensive if you can find a copy, so I thought I'd try my luck here !

Anyone's feedback, or input would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Wig

The medal ribbon is interesting, could it be for pre-1914 service ? King's South Africa Medal 1902 ?

See this page from the Long Long Trail,at top left of this page:

Hi there Sotonmate, thanks for the link, much appreciated.

He also served in the Boer War, as a private in the 2nd Queensland Mounted Infantry (from 1900 to 1901).

So I guess the ribbon would be the Queen's South Africa Medal ?

Take a look at the medal ribbon for that ! For me the centre piece is too bright, and matches more easily the King's:

Wow...judging by the centre peice on the ribbon, yeah, it more easily matches the King's medal.

I found his service record on an Aussie Boer War database. It shows his record of service from 13th January 1900 to 3rd May 1901.

http://members.pcug.org.au/~croe/ozb/oz_boer_more.cgi?record=10680

Would mean he's only entitled to the Queen's Medal ?

Hi Scott,

As a tribute to my great uncle, I want to mount his photo, with reproductions of his medals, and his regimental badges. (he was also in the Boer War)

I've noticed reproduction KEH badges are available, some say 'brass', some say 'white metal'.

I just want to suss out which is the correct finish to use. So, yeah, thanks so much for the link I'll check it out.

Cheers

Hi Wig

B and C squadrons announced their readinesss for deployment on 14th April 1916 and arrangements were quickly made to despatch them - so that by April 21st

4 trains were made ready to carry the 2 squadrons from Bishops Stortford to Southampton. The regiment was extremely popular in the town and they were given a

rousing send-off. There was talk of maidens with streaming eyes!

All regimental badges and buttons are in brass. I have my Grandfather~s full set somewhere!

The slouch hat was often worn on parade but obviously not at the ^Front^

The History of King Edward~s Horse, written by my Grandfather, the late Colonel Lionel James CBE DSO, is perhaps your best point of reference for all things KEH.

I have the Author~s copy and 2 others which I intend to pass on to my own grandchildren. I saw a rather dog eared copy in a London booksellers last year for GBP275!!

I hope this has been of some use to you.

Sincerely

Michael James

Hi Michael,

Thanks so much for your reply,

Becasue I haven't got access to your Grandfather's book, this forum has been a fantastic help.

Especially so, when getting information from a relative of the CO !

Kind regards

Brendan
