melliget Posted 7 August , 2010 Share Posted 7 August , 2010 Hi. Not sure of the eligibility of this chap but he was RNR, so here he is: Commander Lawrence Hugh CRAWFORD, R.N.R., C.B., died 19 Oct 1918 at Charring Cross Hospital. See attached mention in the Fallen Officers section of The Times, 22 Oct 1918. Martin
John Morcombe Posted 7 August , 2010 Share Posted 7 August , 2010 Not found in the RNR officer's medal roll, so no war service recognised by award of campaign medals.
chrisharley9 Posted 8 August , 2010 Share Posted 8 August , 2010 Martin I had already had a look at him during my Times searches; can find no proof that he was serving at the time of his death Chris
melliget Posted 9 August , 2010 Author Share Posted 9 August , 2010 Thanks John and Chris. I thought I had searched the forum for any previous threads but must've done something wrong. Perhaps The Times omitted to add "(retd)" after RNR, although he was in the Fallen Officers section, not the civilian Deaths column.
chrisharley9 Posted 9 August , 2010 Share Posted 9 August , 2010 Martin Im find this all the time with the Times death columns. People are listed as died of wounds when their link to service is somewhat tenuous Chris
David_Underdown Posted 9 August , 2010 Share Posted 9 August , 2010 In this case his work with Trinity House (responsible for lighthouses and navigational aids around the UK, along with the Commissioners of Irish Lights and the Northern Lighthouse Board) was probably seen as being sufficiently important that he was not called up. Neil Clark Posted 9 August , 2010 Share Posted 9 August , 2010 David, A case clearly worthy of investigation. Nice work pity on final outcome though. I have had masses of cases like this one that end in an abort...
