Pals,

I'm researching Private George STONES, 19794, 10th Y&L, who died of wounds back in Blighty on 09 Aug 1916. These wounds were probably sustained at Fricourt on 1-3 July 1916.

SDGW gives his birthplace as Staveley, Derbyshire.

I have found a Pension Record for another George STONES who enlisted in the Sherwood Foresters with Service Number 16992 on 21 Sep 1914. This George Stones however was medically discharged due to dental problems in December 1914.

Unremarkable, but this second George STONES is also listed as being born in Staveley, Derbyshire.

I'm thus working on the obvious possibility that these two may in fact be the same person who quickly re-enlisted.

Can a York & Lancaster specialist please help with a probable enlistment date for a Y&L Service Number of 19794?

I've already checked Mr Nixon's website :)

Cheers,

Mark

Pals,

I've now had confirmation from George Stones' great-granddaughter that these are indeed one and the same man.

George was a miner who originally enlisted at Chesterfield into the Sherwood Foresters on 21 Sep 1914 with Service Number 16992.

He was posted to 12th SF on 29 Sep 1914, but was then medically discharged due to dental problems on 05 Dec 1914.

Some time after this Discharge, he re-enlisted at Sheffield into the York & Lancaster Regiment with Service Number 19794, eventually being posted to the 10th (Service) Battalion.

Family tradition places this early in 1915.

He embarked in France on 10 Sep 1915, which is consistent with his new battalion's embarkation date.

He is listed among the wounded of 10/Y&L from the fighting N of Fricourt 1st/3rd Jul 1916 on the opening days of The Somme and was evacuated back to England on 18 Jul 1916.

He Died of Wounds in Aldershot on 09 Aug 1916 and his body was transported to Sheffield for interment at Darnall Cemetery.

The main loose end still outstanding is dating George's enlistment into the Y&L.

Can anyone give an estimated enlistment date for a 10/Y&L Service Number of 19749 please?

Cheers,

Mark
