A forum friend from Canada has sent me a 'Christmas in the Trenches' story at he bottom of which is an image of Cpl. William J Vince. MM

I know some info about him & from the following link http://www.cwgc.org/...casualty=506690 it would appear there is a possibility that he is related to my mothers side of the family who were called Vince. Hope to establish this in a positive way ......possibly a cousin of my grandfather & his brothers.

I hope that someone in this forum will be good enough to send me a PM with Williams MIC attached & copy of War Service Record if to be found please. thumbsup.png

Can someone also tell me why William was awarded what I understand to be the Military Medal & why he was mentioned in despatches? It would be great to read this & know where he was in action when he was so heroic please? thumbsup.png

If readers would like to comment more on the Christmas story & why Williams image & details are at the end of this it would also be appreciated.

Thanks.

Clive

Requests for Service Record and MIC lookups are not really permitted at the present time. All I can say is that, yes, his MIC and Service Record are on Ancestry....

Son of James and Elizabeth Vince, 136 (later 132) Heath Road, Twickenham.

Link to MID Gazette page:

http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/issues/30093/supplements/5170

and to MM:

The records state that he died of Otitis Media, Meningitis and a brain abcsess at 24th General Hospital, rather than being Killed in Action.

He is noted on this family tree page:

Thanks for all the helpful links Steve - no direct access to Ancestry myself - will access through our local library whenever I need MIC's etc. now. thumbsup.png

The family tree link confirms that James is no relation as his father & mother were from Hampshire & Surrey.....my Vince family were all from rural Suffolk.........the link was tenuous .....his service in the London regiment. 3 out of 4 of my relatives enlisted in Regiments in London!
