vianalky Posted 4 August , 2010 Share Posted 4 August , 2010 Help please, Currently i'm conducting research into a relation that was killed in action on 25th September 1915. Served at home 31/08/1914 to 27/02/1915 France 28/02/1915 to 25/09/1915 KIA 1st/5th Leicestershire Tigers. His MIC shows he (his family) was/were presented with the 1915 Star, British & Victory medal. I have also seen his "Pip, Squeak & Wilfred" with his name on sides (British & Victory) & reverse (Star) Questions, Is the 1915 Star also know as the "Mons" Star? Was i common for the medals to presented to those KIA during the War? Regards, S&F Alan

Regards, S&F Alan The Mons star was a name attributed to the 1914 Star rather than the 1915 Star, the formers qualification period was only from 5th Aug - midnight 22/23rd Nov 1914 for those serving in France or Belgium. Those who were killed who had qualified for medals would have them presented to their NOK, if the NOK could be located.
vianalky Posted 4 August , 2010 Author Share Posted 4 August , 2010 Many thanks for prompt reply. Another question now is there any difference, looking at the "Mons Star" and the "1915 Star"? Thanking you again. johnny_doyle Posted 4 August , 2010 Share Posted 4 August , 2010 http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/medals.asp The 1914 Star has "1914" stamped in a scroll across the swords with "Aug" in a scroll above the sword crossing and "Nov" in a scroll below it. http://www.pathsofglory.co.uk/1914%20star%201.jpg The 1914-15 Star has a scroll across the sword crossing with the text "1914-15" http://www.pathsofglory.co.uk/1915%20star%201.jpg

Thanking you again. Regards, S&F alan:poppy: Allan The Name Mons Star is only a poular name, it is officially the 1914 Star, the difference is it has only the date 1914 in it's centre with "Aug" above and "Nov" below, see the link below. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1914_Star The name 1915 Star is a misnomer, it's actually the 1914-15 Star, the qualification period for it was fron 5th August 1914 till 31st December 1915 for any of the military services in any theatre of War, other than for those who qualified for the 1914 Star (you couldn't have both), it had 1914-15 in the centre. http://en.wikipedia....ki/1914-15_Star Sam
vianalky Posted 4 August , 2010 Author Share Posted 4 August , 2010 Further thanks for all the help. Now yet another question, Pip, Squeak & Wilfred were the 1914, British & Victory medals (were they not?) Mutt & Jeff were the British & Victory medals (were they not?) Did the 1914-15, British & Victory have a "nick" name? Regards, S&F Alan
