I understand that several chemists served in the ranks with the RE Special Brigades. The Special Brigades were responsible for using gas munitions, so it's easy to see why they would have chemists in their ranks.

The form in his service papers appeals specifically to chemists to join the RE.

He appears to have been gassed (or have gassed himself) 22/3/1918

He was in "E" Special Company RE, part of the RE Special Brigade. He was admitted to hospital on 22.3.18 having been gassed . His service record is available at the National Archives as is the unit War Diary.
