Remembered Today:

North West Frontier

Could someone confirm for me if elephants were used by the Mountain Artillery Battery's in the North West Frontier?

If so, were they used to pull cannon's or did they carry smaller, disassembled, artillery in pieces on their backs?

Any idea's of calibres used?

Thanks very much for any help.

Regards

Mike

Thanks Centurion.

I've seen pictures of cannons being pulled by elephants and a movie where they seemed to be carried in pieces carried on top of them.

My Grandfather was there from 1908-12.

I am looking at two photographs:- a) Elephant Battery in Pathan revolt 1897, guns dis assembled.(If that's a word) B) Battery on parade with what appears to be heavies, maybe 60lbs ers. also possible 19th century. these under tow.

In The History of the Indian Mountain Artillery by C.A.L. Graham the only index reference to elephants for transport is their use in Burma in WW2.
