Royal Posted 31 July , 2010 Share Posted 31 July , 2010 Hi I was hoping that someone can help me in finding out some information on the Uganda Rifles button i have posted. It has 'VR& I' on it with the bugle of the Light Infantry. I dont know if this is WW1 or pre WW1. It is part of a large collection of buttons that i have . I am finally getting around to finding out information about them. Many thanks for any help you can give me.
derekb Posted 31 July , 2010 Share Posted 31 July , 2010 Hi Royal, I think VR&I is an abbreviation for "Victoria Regina Imperatrix" (Victoria Queen and Empress), making it pre World War 1. Regards, Derek.
auchonvillerssomme Posted 1 August , 2010 Share Posted 1 August , 2010 The Uganda Rifles had a short and interesting history and it may well be an unusual button. They mutinied in 1897. Although not the case on this button, don't always assume that VRI relates to the date of the button. For example the Royal Canadian Regt.
bushfighter Posted 1 August , 2010 Share Posted 1 August , 2010 Royal That is a nice-looking button. If you can obtain a look at "The King's African Rifles" by Lieutenant Colonel H. Moyse-Bartlett (now in paperback from Naval & Military Press) there are over 40 pages devoted to the Uganda Rifles. The unit served from 1890 to 1901.
