I have got a medal to a soldier A Mitchel died 2/10/15 buried Aveluy.

Can anyone tell me what they were doing on the Somme around this time?

2537 Alfred MITCHELL born and enlisted Bury,Lancs. Landed in France 4.5.1915 with the Highland Division which became 51 Division in mid-May.Died of wounds 2.10.1915. Likely to have been due to trench actions,sniping/artillery/raids etc.as no set battles at that time.The really heavy action was at Loos during this period.

Hi do you know whereabouts the trench was in Authuille ?

I would like to visit there and his grave in March.

Hi

PM me and I'll send scan of map of the trenches manned by the 51st Highland Division at Authuille. Although the map is 1916 little changed and nearly all the trenches have Scottish names
