Perth Digger Posted 28 July , 2010 Share Posted 28 July , 2010 18014 Edward Robert Hurst enlisted in the Rifle Brigade in August 1914, was promoted to Corporal and ended the war as Acting Sergeant in the Machine Gun Corps. This from his MIC. I'd be grateful for any more information on Hurst, including where and when he won the MM. Thank you.
Patesian Posted 6 August , 2010 Share Posted 6 August , 2010 Well, since no-one else has taken up on your query, here goes: Edward Hurst transferred to the MGC between 23/12/15 - 1/1/1916. He was allocated to 5 Bde MG Company, in the 2nd Division. His MM was gazetted 19/2/1917. The only major engagements in which the Company had been involved, prior to that date were: The Battle for Delville Wood 25/7-9/8/1916, and the attack on Waterlot Farm Guillemont, 9/8/1916. Unless he had been recognized for some act of bravery which took place outside these major engagements, it would be fairly safe to accept that the award was in connection with these actions. He had originally enlisted on the 13/8/1914 and was discharged 8/2/1919 (KR392 xvia)on grounds of sickness, receiving the Silver War Badge number B172418. In addition to his MM, he received the 1914-15 Star, BWM & Victory medals.
