Kathie Posted 4 June , 2004 Share Posted 4 June , 2004 I have three cousins who alll seem to visit or spend time at Woking. One was there waiting to go on a bombing course; he says another visited him who had spent nearly a year in hospital before being repatriated to SA; another visited/they met there. What was at Woking? If barracks - whose? were they specially set up for WWI? were they only for South Africans? how long would one stay there? are they still there? and so on? gem22 Posted 4 June , 2004 Share Posted 4 June , 2004 Kathie I don't know if this will help but the British army had a barracks near Woking long before the Great War. The buildings were originally Knaphill Prison and they were taken over by the Army and converted into Inkerman Barracks in 1895. They were used as the home of the Corps of Royal Military Police until the corps moved to its present depot in Chichester. At home I have some photos of my father when he was at the Barracks in the early '50s. It must be a coincidence that South African troops were in Barracks with, or near, the RMP; or is it?
