paul.hickey Posted 18 July , 2010 Share Posted 18 July , 2010 This photograph is among some papers that relate to my great-uncle's war service (7th Battalion, AIF). He is not a member of our family so he is a complete mystery to us. Does his uniform, stripes, medal etc tell part of his story?
Nulli Secundus Posted 3 August , 2010 Share Posted 3 August , 2010 Hello LeoMc, Looking at the medal he is wearing it appears to be a Victorian Long Service Good Conduct Medal. These were only awarded to "other ranks" and obviously prior to Victoria's death. Looking at hte age of the recipient he may have served in the ranks and then re-enlisted at the outbreak of war and been commissioned. Just a guess. In the absence of badges there isn't much else to identify him by.
headgardener Posted 3 August , 2010 Share Posted 3 August , 2010 I'd say he's serving with some sort of Australian volunteer (i.e. part-time, home service) unit. His age is also very suggestive of that. Looks like he's wearing an armband on his left arm. It's not diagnostic of anything, but again it seems to suggest a volunteer unit. Any chance of a close-up of his shoulder-title?
