Guest Posted 2 June , 2004 Share Posted 2 June , 2004 Does anyone know where the 8th East Surreys were located from late August to September 1915? I'm a little confused because the Regimental web-site suggests they were at Loos in September, but the Long Long Trial suggests that it was the 9th East Surreys that were at the Battle of Loos. I'd be grateful for any light that could be thrown on this one. Thanks, Ray Hooper
Paul Reed Posted 2 June , 2004 Share Posted 2 June , 2004 The 8th East Surreys were part of the 18th Eastern Division, so they were down on the Somme between August and September 1915, and did not take part in the Battle of Loos. The 9th were 24th Division, so were in action there, and indeed suffered heavy losses at Loos in attacking the ground below Hill 70.
Guest Posted 6 June , 2004 Share Posted 6 June , 2004 Paul, Thanks. This makes sense as I have never heard anything about Loos 1915 in the family. By the way I will keep a look out for you when we visit the Somme on 10-12th July. Ray Hooper
