Stoker Pickford died of pneumonia at Plymouth (Volunteer: Kevin O’Neill)

*Bundanoon is a small Australian town which, amazingly, I have actually visited. It was also the first town in the world to ban the sale of bottled water!

George Barrick was a baker and (motor) delivery van driver from Great Dunmow (Essex), where he was also a bellringer at the parish church. After his marriage in Feb 1914 the couple moved to Stanford-le-Hope. He enlisted in the Suffolk Regiment, and while serving in France came down with a mysterious ailment (swelling of abdomen, coughing) which led to his transfer to the Labour Corps (via a brief period as a Regimental Policeman in the Suffolks' garrison Battalion). He was eventually diagnosed with myeloid leukaemia, and he was also found to have an abdominal tumour. His condition eventually worsened to the point where he was discharged, and he died a few months later, primarily as a result fo the tumour.

His name was identified by the steward of roll of honour of the Central Council for Church Bell Ringers after he found a memorial to several ringers killed in WWI in Great Dunmow church. I was then able to track down the service documentation and obtain the death certificate.

Thanks to Terry for arranging submission to CWGC on my behalf, and also to Chris Harley who is still trying to track down his grave.

Rest in peace lads, and thanks to Terry and the team for all their hard work.

If, in the future, anyone comes across anything more on Harry Swarbrick then I'd be keen to know about it.

Dave Swarbrick
