paulfeeney Posted 9 July , 2010 Share Posted 9 July , 2010 Hello all I am researching my grandfather John Clancy Gough (Service No's: 372, 1713, 172889, 841238), and am confused regarding his medal entitlement. His service record says the he joined the Territorials on the 6th August 1914 as a 1st line soldier for 4 years service (Sn. 372). On 25 May 1916, he went to fight in France with the 61 South Midland DAC, (service number changed from Territorial to a Regular Army No. 172889) On the page regarding his Military History, it states the he received the following: British War Medal Victory Medal I was wondering if he would also have been entitled to the Territorial Force Medal? The criteria for receipt of the TF Medal states: The Territorial Force War Medal 1914-1919 was awarded to members of the Territorial Force only. To qualify, the recipient had to have been a member of the Territorial Force on or prior to 30 September 1914, and to have served in an operational theatre outside of the United Kingdom between 5 August 1914 and 11 November 1918. Can anyone please help clarify? Many thanks Paul
SteveE Posted 9 July , 2010 Share Posted 9 July , 2010 Paul Qualification for the TFWM was that the men in question were; Members of the Territorial Force on the 4th August 1914 or Members who had completed four years or more service prior to the 4th August 1914, and rejoined prior to 30th September 1914. And that they; Volunteered prior to the 30th September 1914 to serve outside the UK. Actually served outside the UK between 4th August 1914 and 11th November 1918 Were not eligible for the 1914 or 1914/15 Star. If, as you say, he enlisted on 6th August 1914 then I suspect the answer is he was not entitled. Regards Steve

Regards Steve Hi Steve Thanks for your reply to my question Ah, I didn't realise that to qualify they needed to have been a Territorial for 4 years before 4th August. According to his Service Record he definatly enlisted on 6th Aug. Thanks again for the clarification. Paul
