harley1962 Posted 3 July , 2010 Share Posted 3 July , 2010 Hi I bought a Victory medal to a k.i.a of the 10th Welsh Regt. He was killed on 10/07/1916 and is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial would i be right in thinking he would have been killed during the battle for Mametz Wood? Bernard_Lewis Posted 3 July , 2010 Share Posted 3 July , 2010 Yes. The 10th Welsh (and the rest of the Welsh Division) attacked Mametz Wood on 10 July 1916, a lesser attack on the 7th having failed. Over 4000 casualties for the Division over several days. Bernard

larney Posted 5 July , 2010 Share Posted 5 July , 2010 Around 452 men of the 38th Welsh Division fell on 10 July 1916 altogether. The initial assault on 7 July cost the Division around 184 men, with 218 men falling on the last day of the attack, on 11 July. Mametz Wood cost the Division over 1,200 men killed (and dying of their resulting wounds in the weeks after), with the total including wounded for the Division being in the region of 4,000 casualties for that action alone. It's a nice medal to have in your collection Harley 1962! SteveJ.
