Guest Posted 30 June , 2010 Share Posted 30 June , 2010 hi im trying to find out if my father in laws dad fought towards the end of the war.His name was thomas daniel sturge born in 1899 in edmonton,i have found his service records from when he enlisted in the dorsetshire reg, number 15238 in 1915 claiming he was older than his sixteen years, and also letters from his mother to the military and back asking for his release due to being underage, this was granted in february 1916.The family are convinced he did fight and remember seeing a photo of him wearing a kilt. There was a thomas sturge who fought with the royal scots number 44854 is it possible to find out if this was him, or if not did he join up again with another regiment. Thomas died in 1961.Any help would be great
corisande Posted 30 June , 2010 Share Posted 30 June , 2010 You have his service record and that shows when he left the army, and that he never served outside UK in Dorsets The medal card index shows only 4 Thomas Sturgis, and you can eliminate the Thomas Edward, and the man who was killed in action You can then look at the Manchesters man and the Royal Scots man. If you think it could be Royal Scots man. check when that service number was issued, if it was before your man left Dorsets, then it is unlikely to be him. If they do not overlap, then the Scots man is still in the frame. Perhaps someone with knowledge of Royal Scots numbering here can date 44854 for you.
