Remembered Today:

Canadians in Canterbury

I am in correspondence with somebody who is adamant that a Canadian regiment was based at Canterbury for the duration of the war. He also assures me that they had their own MT company. Does anybody have any information, please, about their role, or were they based there while training before transferring to France/Flanders?

Hi,

According to David W. Love, "A Call to Arms", page 90, there was a Canadian Cavalry Depot in/near Canterbury. Perhaps someone else can provide more details?

Cheers,

Michael

In April 1915 the Fort Garry Horse moved from Salisbury Plain to Canterbury to form the Canadian Cavalry Depot. For the next nine months it trained and furnished drafts of men to reinforce the Canadian Cavalry Brigade then fighting in France. And that seems to be all the information there is from a quick Google and a search of the Canadian Expeditionary Force Study Group forum and G W L Nicholson's Canadian Expeditionary Force 1914–1919. And there probably won't be too much in the local papers, which by 1915 were more restricted than in 1914 in what they could report.

An email to the Local Studies Library may be worth trying.
