West Somerset Yeomanry (Somerset LI)

I have postcards from someone who may have been a soldier in the West Somerset Yeomanry. The cards are from Torquay in Apr 1917 and Weymouth in Jun 1917. As a starter, does anyone know whether the unit was in UK at the time or indeed have an idea what a WSY soldier might have been doing in those towns at those times? Max D

Part of the answer you seek is contained within the Long Long Trail - click on the button top row and search under Yeomanry Regiments.

There is possibily a Tidworth link here.

Thank you Philip. I'd checked that area out already and if I am reading it all correctly, the unit was in the middle east at the time in question and therefore the person concerned was most likely in Torquay and Weymouth as an individual. This is all a bit tenuous anyway, the cards suggest he was a fleeting admirer of my grandmother in Torquay who doesn't appear in her life after this so I am not too bothered if I can't take this further. Thanks again.

The 1st line battalion was in the middle east, but the 2nd and 3rd lines were in the UK. 3rd/1st were in Wessex area, so there's a possible link to Weymouth.

He could have been wounded or on leave at the time of writing, of course.

Absolutely - the more I think about it the more I realise that he could have doing anything with almost anyone!
