Here are some images I was given recently.

I know for sure the first is of some men in the 19th N.F.

The sergeant sat at the front is Vernon Vart.

but as for the rest ?.

One of the men crossed on this image could be Arthur E Dixon, but which Pioneer

battalion he was in I'm not sure. The next two images have several of the same men

in them, but I dont know what unit it is

This one is again a pioneer unit of the NF, but again I don't know which.

This is I assume a Labour corps unit. The 2nd Lt is Vernon Vart, Chinese labour corps

Note all the different cap badges

And last of all

Written on the back is "Maisie from Arthur, Bicester V.A.D. Hospital 28th April 1916"

I think Ive got all this right

Lovely photo's Peter and thanks for sharing them with us. I dont have much on 19/385 L/Sgt Vernon Vart apart from the fact that he was from the Bishop Auckland area and reported as wounded in July 1916.

Hi

Arthur Dixon 19/1333 came from 419 Shields Road, Heaton, Newcastle upon Tyne.

He transferred to the Labour Corps as 651002.

I have a postcard he sent from Perham Down camp to his wife on 26 August 1915.

I would say that the wriggly tin huts are the camp at Masham where 19/NF were before the moved to Perham Down.

regards

John

Nice photos but I'm confused - the Chinese labour corps was not a military unit (and its members were civilians) so how come a British Lt in it?

You have to get Ivor Lee's book!

"A CLC Company, commanded by a major or captain, had four subalterns and eighteen European NCOs………………There were 473 Chinese, who did not hold a military rank, 443 of whom were labourers. The other 30 consisted of an interpreter clerk, interpreters, gangers and dressers."

A E Dixon 16/1465 "C" Company

on the medal card he's only down as Albert and no "E"

Hi

The scans requested have been sent to your home email at a larger size but I thought members might like to see my research

Note that in the Bn Nominal roll they dont use A E Dixon but only A.

The main clue is the card is a view of Swinton Hall Masham N Yorks which is where 19/NF was based until they moved to Perham Down. A Dixon must have bought the card at Masham and then posted it after the move to Perham Down.

The A Dixon in 16/NF would never have been near either place.
