Remembered Today:

Telford District Roll of Honour

Recommended Posts

Quite a big ask this one.

I've been compiling a Telford District Roll of Honour for a while now. The research has presented 1683 names from various conflicts. Now only 35 men remain unidentified.

I can find many of them on the census records. However it's their death i'm interested in.

Can you help find these men?

Neil

Hi Neil. Am sure you have considered THIS man for Candlin, A.R. Little Dawley

Enlisted Wellington Salop born Horsehay, Dawley, Salop

Perhaps a brother's name on Memorial by mistake?

Cheers Mike

Thanks Kevin, Mike.

Mike,

The T. Teece you have i've found on 2 memorials, his brother died of wounds. However, i think the census records show another T.Teece in Wrockwardine Wood.

The Candlin you have is on the same memorial as A.R Candlin.

Kevin,

I had found the same chap as you. However in modern Telford there is Wrockwardine Wood and just on the outskirts of Telford is a village called Wrockwardine. Both are around 6-7 miles apart. The Jones we've found, to my knowledge, has no connection with Wrockwardine Wood. Nice and confusing :)

Kevin,

You might be onto something there. He's not on Hadley memorial, or any others.

Another man on the memorial, from London, was listed under his wifes initials. The memorial was erected in 1929.

Thank you.

Neil, on Mapping Our Anzacs, I found this man.

Haven't found him on CWGC, and he only seems to have 3 pages of service record?

Worth a look

I assume you are referring to L Price only on Post #6?

Have also this:

Name: CHURM, HARRY

Initials: H

Nationality: United Kingdom

Rank: Private

Regiment/Service: King's Own (Royal Lancaster Regiment)

Unit Text: 1st/4th Bn.

Age: 39

Date of Death: 31/07/1917

Service No: 201457

Additional information: Son of the late James Churm, of Whitmore Reans, Wolverhampton.

Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead

Grave/Memorial Reference: Panel 12.

Memorial: YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL

but does it link in anyway to your quest?

So you want an A Jones from Wrockwardine Wood which is not the A Jones from Wrockwardine, right?

They don't happen to roost in trees at night do they, a bit too little of anything else to do at night it seems!!!

One Jones family in the right place, but not an "A" Jones

Name: JONES, WILLIAM HOPE

Initials: W H

Nationality: United Kingdom

Rank: Lance Serjeant

Regiment/Service: Monmouthshire Regiment

Unit Text: 3rd Bn.

Age: 25

Date of Death: 20/12/1915

Service No: 2286

Additional information: Son of James and Ellen Jones, of Wrockwardine Wood, Salop.

Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead

Grave/Memorial Reference: I. L. 4A.

Cemetery: WIMEREUX COMMUNAL CEMETERY

the other

Name: JONES, JOSEPH CHARLES

Initials: J C

Nationality: United Kingdom

Rank: Private

Regiment/Service: Royal Welsh Fusiliers

Unit Text: 4th Bn.

Age: 18

Date of Death: 27/08/1918

Service No: 91478

Additional information: Son of William and Louisa Jones, of Mafeking Terrace, Wrockwardine Wood, Oakengates, Salop.

Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead

Grave/Memorial Reference: B. 155.

Cemetery: CANTERBURY CEMETERY, Kent

so do you know whether either of these also had an "A" Jones, or is there a third Jones family?

Mike,

Could be although i think he's a Robert Hunt born 1873, living Ketley 1901.

Kevin,

You're right it is Post 6, i was on about. Thank you.

Wrockwardine Wood it is, not Wrockwardine. We have the same problem with a Donnington Wood and 2 Donnington's.

Harry Churm. I'll have a look on. Right, the chap i think it is was born in 1876 in Hadley. 1901 census shows him living in Wellington with his parents Enoch and Sarah Churm. Your chap has the right age but, his father is a James.

William Hope Jones and Joseph Charles Jones. No go i'm affraid. Both are on the memorial at Wrockwardine Wood.

Postam, T.S. I've no idea on this one. I gave it alot of attention a while back and failed.

Thanks, Mike, Kevin

Hi Neil

There are two possibilities for Candlin but I do not think either died during the war, not unless died after being discharged & not recorded by CWGC or may have died after cut off point ? anyway worth a look at.

13356 Pte. Candlin, Arthur, resided 29 The Pottery, Dawley. 8/K.S.L.I. Trans. to R. Innis. F. 44595. Info. from Absent Voters Lists 1918 & M.I.C.

17948 Pte. Candlin, Alfred Edwin (E not R ?) resided 19 Buildwas Rd., Coalbrookdale. 6th & 2/K.S.L.I. Wounded 1916 x 2. Info. from Victory/British War Medal Roll, Absent Voters Lists 1918 & Wellington & Shrewsbury Journal 25-03-16 (with 6th Batt.) + 15-06-16 .

Not likely but

200400 Pte. Jones, Alfred William, Donnington Wood, Shrops. (1 Hopton Road, Trench, Wrockwardine Wd.) Enlisted Wellington. Also had K.S.L.I. No. 1873. 1/4/K.S.L.I. K. in A. 26/03/18. 7274 Pte. Leonord, James, (Wrockwardine Wood) Landed in F/F 10/09/14 with 1/K.S.L.I. Also served in 7th Batt. Discharged no date given. Info. from 1914 Star Medal Roll. Recorded in Died in Wrekin Roll of Honour, I sadly do not have a copy of the Wrekin Roll of Honour, many years ago when I first started my reseach a chap sent me a copy of it which he found in a skip, after taking a note of all K.S.L.I. men recorded in it I returned it but in those days I did not keep a record of people who helped me out. Any way I have no date of death.

Annette,

Thanks for your help.

Candlin. I think you have the right chap in Arthur, but there's no trace of his death. It looks like A.E Candlin died in 1973.

Evans, H. Unfortunately the H. Evans you found is also on the memorial. There is a remote possibility it might have been the same man?

Jones, A.W. I think you've cracked it Annette :) He's on no other local memorial and Trench is in the Parish of Wrockwardine Wood. Thank You

Leonard, J That's interesting. I have the original roll, but he's not listed in it!

1911 Census shows two James Leonards serving overseas (Military) one born, 1887, the other 1879. I have no idea if any of them were in the Shropshires. I don't have access.

thanks for your help Annette,

Regards

Neil

Hi Neil

Just got back from holiday and saw your post, All the Dawley lads you have listed I have details on. Just give me a while to sort them out but you will find Candlin on the Pembrooke Dock memorial and also off the top of my head I think one of the Teece's is mentioned on the Stockport memorial but I will check this out for you.

Are you going to the South Staffs pals meeting on Tuesday ?
