Beau Geste Posted 21 June , 2010 Share Posted 21 June , 2010 A friend is researching a soldier of the Great War whose Medal Card says he was Pte 13423 Nichol Rumney of the........and here's the confusing bit........11/Bord H. My first reaction was the 11th Border Regiment but the 'H' seems to discount that. Assistance would be gratefully received. Harry

ralphjd Posted 21 June , 2010 Share Posted 21 June , 2010 Tend to agree with Gary, Lothian and Border Horse. Cap badge a "Garb". Ralph.
corisande Posted 21 June , 2010 Share Posted 21 June , 2010 If you put just "bord h" into ancestry medal section, you get 195 MICs, but only a few without the addition of eg "lothian" However if you look at ones where the regt is just a bald "bord h" and nothing more there are only 3 or 4 cards Interestingly he has a relative Arthur sign up with him at the same time, probably a brother, and they have adjacent numbers Hoever there is another chap Moran with "11/bord h" and he died. Go to CWGC on him and he is recorded as 11th battalion Border Regt there Moran is also on SDGW and you can see has a service number in same batch Name: John Moran Birth Place: Darlington, Durham Death Date: 1 Jul 1916 Death Location: France & Flanders Enlistment Location: Carlisle Rank: Private Regiment: Border Regiment Battalion: 11th Battalion Number: 13283 Type of Casualty: Killed in action Balance of probability is that your man (men) were in 11th battallion Border Regt too
Chris_Baker Posted 21 June , 2010 Share Posted 21 June , 2010 The H/1/103 roll reference on the card tells you it is Border Regiment. The clerk must have been having a bad day. The date given, 23 November 1915, was the day that the 11th (Service) Battalion (Lonsdale) arrived in France. There was no 11th Bn of the Lothians & Border Horse.
