rflory Posted 20 June , 2010 Share Posted 20 June , 2010 From the 78th Brigade, R.F.A. War Diary, July 1918 (Ref. Map. France, Sheet 62dNE. 1:20,000) 1 July 1918: Corbie: After night march Brigade arrived at Wagon Lines in VECQUEMONT area. Reconnoitred battery positions in the morning on outskirts of HAMELET. Moved into positions during the evening. Positions to remain silent. 2 July 1918: Corbie: Only a few rounds were allowed per battery for registration. During the night enemy very active with harassing fire and three batteries had slight casualties. 3 July 1918: Corbie: Enemy fire below normal during day & night. 4 July 1918: Corbie: At 3.10 am our artillery opened and the Australian Infantry supported by 2 battalions of Americans and 48 tanks attacked. Slight resistance offered and hostile barrage poor. Attack apparently a complete surprise. All objectives were gained. 35 officers (a Battn. HQ Staff) and 1300 prisoners were taken, 2 field guns, 100 mgs and 14 T. M. During the early part of the day enemy bombarded HAMEL from old front line, but shooting was very erratic and one H. A. carried out. Good counter battery shoots! At 10.20 pm enemy counter attacked in PM, taking 11 prisoners. Australians immediately attacked recovering prisoners and taking 50 more. 5 July 1918: Day quiet. Batteries pulled out in the evening. Withdrew to their W. L. [wagon lines]. 6 July 1918: 10 pm. Brigade marched back to its wagon lines in LEAZVILLERS area and remained in GHQ and Corps Mobile Reserve. [no entries for 7 or 8 July 1918]. Regards.
