Local Church Memorial

Hi folks

In my local Church in the village of Chapelhall, there is a memorial listing 26 "Adherents and Friends of this Church" including my Gt Gt Uncle John Barton who died in WW1. Trawling through CWGC I managed to find 9 definite entries matching the list, 6 possibles and the other 11 I'm afraid I can't narrow down.

Could someone with a SDGW disc please have a look at the list of the men below from the CWGC site to see if there is any mention of Chapelhall, Gartness, Calderbank or Airdrie on their entries? Airdrie is the nearby town where they'd likely have enlisted.

Thomas Hailstones Pte S/16112 7th Camerons KIA 03/08/17.

Edward Hyslop L/Cpl 17389 1st Royal Scots Fusiliers KIA 25/09/15.

JS Jack Gnr 201969 179 Btn RFA KIA 01/09/18 (Memorial has James S Jack)

Robert Scott McDonald S/14364 L/Cpl 2nd A&SH attd Leinster Regt Died 12/12/18 (Memorial has Robert S MacDonald).

W C McEwan 651044 Gnr 315th Bde RFA KIA 21/10/17 (Memorial has William C McEwan).

David Russell 7102 Bdr 94th Bde RFA KIA 21/09/17.

Thanks

Sam

Have you tried Geoff's Wonderful Search Engine?

http://www.hut-six.co.uk/cgi-bin/search1421.php

He asks for a donation towards the Help for Heroes campaign. Once done you will have access to a means of searching the CWGC entries by a single word, a name, a regiment , a dateetc etc.

Working from a minimum entry such as your church location might pay dividends.

Thanks Dean

Looks like Hailstones, Hyslop and McDonald are in, Russell may still be possible as Chapelhall was part of Shotts parish at that time, Jack and McEwan I'll have to check further.

daggers

For Jack, McEwan and the other 11, I've searched the CWGC site by name and there isn't a possible match for any of them due to the lack of NOK's address or the fact it's different from the casualties, the name is all I have to go on, so Geoffs engine I'm afraid wouldn't be of any benefit.

Hi Sam

I wonder if this could be the William McEwan you are looking for Pte S/16113, 7th QOCH, DOW 28/05/1916:

http://www.cwgc.org/search/casualty_detail...?casualty=60633

I think CWGC wrongly has him as Cox William McEwan instead of William Cox McEwan.

His service records exist on ancestry altough they are vert faded and damaged. His name is given as William McEwan and his personal effects were sent to Mrs Betsy McEwan of Weirs Land, Chapelhall, Lanarkshire.

The Scottish National War Memorial has him as Willaim McEwan born in Bothwell. A will exists as the Scottish National Archives under ref SC70/8/267/48.

Thanks for those 2, I now realise how I missed James Jack, I had been searching for J S, then took off the S, I just had a look again and because I didn't remove the space after the J, the search engine was still looking for a 2nd name/initial.

Still unsure About Russell, Shotts Kirk, is a well known, very old church which can be seen from the M8 motorway between Glasgow and Edinburgh, it's not actually in Shotts , it's on the edge of the village of Salsburgh only 4 miles from Chapelhall, Shotts itself is 3 miles in the opposite direction from the Kirk, it'll have to be a don't know for now.

Kevin

Thanks for that list, of those 17, only 10 appear on the Church memorial, but it was for "Adherants and Friends" of this particular Church of Scotland so it sadly wouldn't list Roman Catholics or non adherents, 2 of those 10 were Jack and McEwan , the rest I had.

About 10 years ago a small War memorial was set up in Chapelhall, up until that time we didn't have one, on it are only listed the dead of WW2, I can only assume those names from WW1 were not included as they only represented the members of the Church of Scotland rather than the whole community.

I'll take those names and the other 7 you've supplied and keep digging, if I can get enough of a case, I may approach the community council with a proposition to add the WW1 names to the Memorial, there is pleanty of room as the WW2 names only occupy 1 of it's 4 sides.

Thanks again everyone.

Sam. I wrote the address wrong it should read 161 Shottskirk Road it is up by Hannah Park home of the Shotts Bon Accord, so it is definitely in "The Shotts"

Sorry about that, lived in Allanton so I know the area quite well.

Cheers Rob.
