Terry Carter Posted 13 June , 2010 Share Posted 13 June , 2010 Is there a Monmouthsire Regt researcher on the Forum? If so could it be established what the 2nd Bn was doing in July/August 1915. Would they have been in Auchonvillers on the Somme? This is the time when British Army relieved the French on the Somme sector. connaughtranger Posted 13 June , 2010 Share Posted 13 June , 2010 Hi Not a huge amount of detail found in the history but gives some idea. 27th July to Auchonvillers where they found shelter in the derelict houses. Their task was to turn the village into a strong point if the front line was breached. Trenches were dug, dug-outs constructed and cellars fortified. August was mainly taken up with mining and attachments to an RE Tunnelling Company in the vicinity of the Redan. Capt A H Edwards MC and a party carried out counter preparations. On August 23rd the battalion went into Brigade reserve at Mailly-Maillet and on 30th to Beaussart in Divisional reserve. On August 30th it was realised that the Germans were preparing to blow a mine and the prepared camouflets were successfully blown which stopped further enemy mining activity for some time Regards Martin
