warproject Posted 13 June , 2010 Share Posted 13 June , 2010 Hi All. I wondered if there is a listing or any one knows of which British regiments were overseas at the time of the 1911 Census, especially Northampton Battalions. I do know the 2nd were at Floriana Barracks, Malta. T.I.A. Sandy
Stebie9173 Posted 13 June , 2010 Share Posted 13 June , 2010 I detect someone looking at me..... !! Yes, the 2nd Northamptons were at Floriana Barracks. Are you looking at what battalions were where or a listing of the men? 1st Battalion were nominally at Raglan Barracks at Devonport, but since they had just arrived home from India (swopping with 2nd Battalion who had just got to Malta) most were on home leave following their overseas duty. I've already posted a statistics analysis here: Analysis of 2nd Northamptons at Floriana Barracks, Malta per 1911 Census Steve.
warproject Posted 13 June , 2010 Author Share Posted 13 June , 2010 Not sure what that means Steve. I wanted to find my ancestors who were serving and not at home. Thank you for the offer. Sandy
Stebie9173 Posted 13 June , 2010 Share Posted 13 June , 2010 Don't worry Sandy, I was just referring to the Northamptons being my "speciality".... I'll dig the file out and get it sent to you. The Census Excel sheet is from printouts at the NA. I was going to get digital copies from Find My Past during last night's free offer but since FMP's server slowed to a halt, I didn't get chance. Sue Light Posted 13 June , 2010 Share Posted 13 June , 2010 Sandy As a general rule, if you do an ordinary 'person search' on the 1911, put the name in as usual, and in the box for 'County' scroll down and choose 'Overseas Military.' You have to be a bit more flexible with the search term, as often only initials were used, and the dates and places of birth were not particularly accurate. It's surprising sometimes which barracks you end up in, but interesting all the same. Sue
warproject Posted 14 June , 2010 Author Share Posted 14 June , 2010 Steve I am most grateful for the Excel Spreadsheet that you shared with me. It is amazing as all your knowledge on the Northants is. I seem to always asking for things for nothing, yet I would like to assure forum members I do a lot of research totally freely for folk in Northamptonshire and have done for 25 years. I would not like folk to think I just take without giving something back. I hope you realise my original posting was for the actual RG14 etc number I needed, I looked at the Help on FMP and it showed how to do it, so I will hopefully be able to get to the area next time. I did manage to get down 35 images, but could have got alot more if the reference had been known to me for certain areas. Sue thank you for your guidance which was most helpful. Stebie9173 Posted 14 June , 2010 Share Posted 14 June , 2010 I did sort of realise afterwards that it was not necessarily the list of men you wanted, but hey, once the work is done it shouldn't go to waste.... I don't actually have the references for the exact sheets. The NA printouts don't actually print the References on them, as I found out later The sheets I have are in groups - 14 then 12 then 10 then an odd 2 pages = 38 pages. These last two tripped me up as I didn't realise they were missing until later. There is another 3 pages for the Infarta Military Hospital where some of the men from the battalion (included on the spreadsheet) are situated. The sick parade men have been crossed through on the barracks censuses, but I included them "in barracks". Steve.
warproject Posted 18 June , 2010 Author Share Posted 18 June , 2010 Hi Steve in case you are still looking. The reference for the Barracks is RG14 PN 34986 RD 641 SD 11 ED 12 FMP have altered their offer for today so you can have 90 minutes any time throughout Friday and Saturday if already a member etc. http://www.findmypast.co.uk/world-cup.jsp?...=WorldCup160610 I down loaded all Floriana ones and quite a few others, but not the Infarta Military Hospital. Let's hope England carries on. Sandy
