ianjonesncl Posted 6 June , 2010 Share Posted 6 June , 2010 Peter This book may be of interest; <H1 class=parseasinTitle>The Gateshead Gurkhas: A History of the 9th Battalion the Durham Light Infantry 1859-1967 (Paperback)</H1>I think there is a copy in Newcastle Library, and the Durham Light Infantry Museum should have one for sale. Tyneside Chinaman Posted 6 June , 2010 Share Posted 6 June , 2010 Hi If he was in Salonika he was with the 2/9th Battalion. That is the second line of the 9th Battalion. 2/9/DLI arrived in Salonika 15/11/16. 1/9/DLI only served in France. Hope this helps John

Hope this helps John My source says he contracted malaria in Salonica, so I figure unless he went there on holiday he was in the 2/9th DLI His medal card says Theatre of war first served in (1) Date of entry 20,4,1915 So he could have been transferred form the 1/9th to the 2/9th ? Any medal for serving in Salonica ? Found this http://www.gwpda.org/memoir/Salonica/salonTC.htm
Peterhastie Posted 9 June , 2010 Author Share Posted 9 June , 2010 The 1/9th arrived in France 20.4.1915, so I figure he initially served in France. The "Gateshead Gurkhas" only mentions the formation of the 2/9th and its posting to Salonika, but thanks anyway Ian. According to the Gazette he relinquished his commision from the 9th in 1920. No mention of when he recieved it ? I still find the Salonika malaria more than a coincidence. Anyone got any war diaries for the 9th or 2nd/9th DLI. If not I'll go to the DLI museum. http://www.ccoynblhomeguard.co.uk/FHutt.html Thanks all
Tyneside Chinaman Posted 10 June , 2010 Share Posted 10 June , 2010 Hi don't go to the museum all the records are in the County Archives at County Hall. You will need to book - you can check on line if they have 9/DLI war diary. regards John
